About Me
I’m Kate. I have a huge passion for traveling and exploring this wonderful world we live in. I got my first taste of international travel when I was 18 and now I’m always counting down the days until my next adventure. Although I wish I could spend all my time exploring the world, I work full-time in engineering at a job I love. I believe that you don’t have to abandon your career or life in order to see the world. Travel is a mindset and even when I can’t explore new destinations, I’m always looking for adventures close to home.
I was born and raised in the Midwest and I love spending my time exploring the beauty in this area. I have a boyfriend of four years, Sant, who is my best friend and favorite travel partner. I’m an avid reader, food enthusiast, and an adventure seeker that is exploring our world one trip at a time.
About My Site
I started Travel Far, Eat Well to document my journey through charming cities and my experiences tasting and cooking new foods.
Travel Far
I believe life is too short and the world is too big for anyone to stay in one place for their entire life. My goal is to experience new cultures, meet new people, learn new languages, and venture outside of my comfort zone. Although I have big dreams of traveling far and exploring lands and cultures different from my own, I think it’s so important to never forget where you came from. Travel Far, Eat Well chronicles my adventures near, far and everywhere in between.
Eat Well
When I think of eating well, I think of expanding my culinary horizons by trying all types of foreign cuisine. When I travel, I’m not only looking forward to seeing the architecture and experiencing the culture, I’m always excited to taste the native dishes.
Tasting foods from around the world motivates me to test my culinary boundaries in the kitchen. One way to satisfy my wanderlust when I can’t travel is to recreate some of my favorite culinary delights from the countries I’ve visited. Travel Far, Eat Well reveals some of my favorite restaurants, foods, and recipes from my travels.

Starting mid-May I will be traveling through Holland, Belgium, France, Spain and then to London! Do you have any travels planned?

Have been to them all. I’ll be curious which you like most. When will you be in London? I went to France, Mexico and Holland last year, so used up a lot of holiday time ha. I’ve never been to Ireland though, so would like to go by the end of the year.

We will be in London for a few days in the second week of June. I would love to go to Ireland too, but we didn’t have time on this trip. Hopefully you get there this year!

Thanks. A friend is getting married there so might try and go a few days earlier to see different parts of the country. Not sure what I’ll be doing in June, but feel free to get in touch nearer the time if you want any recommendations or whatever.

Hi Kate
Thanks for the follow. We appreciate it since we are such old farts to someone your age. It’s nice to see people your age combining study with travel. We see so many of this generation that just wants to do basically nothing except “earn online income” which seems unfair to those of us raised in an America where you worked many years before doing whatever you want. Anyway, you seem to have a great attitude so good luck with everything; we’ll follow along and hope we can occasionally inspire you.
Best

I agree, the world is too big not to explore it 🙂 I’ve realized the more I travel, the more I want to discover more and more. It’s quite addictive.
I’ve read that you are planning to visit Belgium, I’m from Belgium myself 😀 Where are you going to travel in my flat country ? 😀

I have definitely realized the same thing! The more I travel, the bigger my desire to travel grows! Travel is definitely addictive, but hey, it’s a great thing to be addicted to 🙂 When we are in Belgium we will be visiting Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels and I am so excited! Do you have any suggestions on things we must do or see before we leave?

Bruges, yes, you have to go to Bruges, this is a must do ! It is so romantic. By train from Brussels it is very convenient, and the town is close to the train station. I would recommend walking near the canals and exploring the town on foot. I would visit the major attractions (the Belfort, the Grote Markt, the staddhuis, the Spiegelrei, The burg , …). If you are not sure, next to the train station, there is a tourism office, you can get a map from there. My favorite place in Bruges is the Begijnhof, you have to visit !!! It’s so pretty. Don’t bother going to the chocolate museum, not worth it. If you try to find a good place to eat, avoid restaurants near the Begijnhof, most of them are tourist traps. A meal should not be more expensive than 20 euros, keep that in mind.
Gent, I would also recommend going there, from Brussels it is also very convenient by train. I’ve made a post about Gent, maybe you can have a look : https://beautifuliceland.wordpress.com/2014/11/26/visiting-ghent-promenade-through-an-enchanting-belgian-city/
In Brussels, checking out the Grand place and going to “mont des arts “nearby is quite nice. The museum for music instruments is awesome !!! Go to the café “le delirium tremens”, they have more than 1000 beers. It is great. You can have a “moule & frites” chez léon nearby, the best restaurant in town !!! I love going there. Don’t stop at the other restaurants of “la rue des bouchers” it is a MASSIVE TOURIST TRAP. It’s not fresh, my dad got seafood poisoning there. For fresh mussels, go chez léon. If you go on the website, you can download a voucher and have a cheaper price. Another option would be to eat in Sainte-Catherine’s square. There are many options to eat good food over there, especially during lunchtime they have deals.
You can also visit a traditional brewery in Brussels : http://www.cantillon.be/br/3_1 to learn how the old school traditional lambec beers are made. Buying chocolate, Neuhaus is my favourite but Galler is quite nice too. You can have fries and Belgian waffles 😉 Visiting the Atonium and have a look at Manniken piss could be nice as well.
As for Antwerpen, well, I’ve been there twice, but I didn’t find it amazing. There is the zoo. hmm ..The aquarium ? Why do you want to go there ? You know that this year, Mons is the European capital for culture ? They have plenty of events organized and 4 news museums 🙂
Sorry for the long post 😉

Oh wow, thank you so much, Gin! I was really lacking on what to do in Belgium but you gave us SO many wonderful ideas. We will definitely be checking out all of these! We are just stopping in Antwerp for a day trip on our way to Bruges from Amsterdam so we won’t be there very long. I am so thankful for your vast knowledge of Belgium and what to do/what not to do. I am excited to try out some of your restaurant suggestions, I love trying new restaurants that were suggested to me because I know they will be good! Thank you again for all the suggestions, I can’t wait to explore Belgium! 🙂

Well, I’ve been living in Belgium for so long that I had time to explore a bit 😀
I’m glad my suggestions could help you. If you have ANY questions, don’t hesitate to ask me, I love helping people planning their trip 🙂 Some places in Antwerpen are dirty and not safe, you are right to not stay for too long over there 🙂
